Why I am not completing the Canadian Census
Around the date of the recent federal election Statistics Canada published the 2011 Census. This has been controversial because the Harper government went over the head of the Director of Stats Canada to make the Long Form Census voluntary.
Because I think that both the Short and Long form Census should be mandatory and because the Harper government does not respect Canadian law (for example, the Kyoto Agreement which Canada signed) I have refused to complete the Census. As of today (July 4) I have received 5 pieces of mail demanding that I fill out the form as well as one visit, when I was out but my son spoke with the representative and told them I had no intention of completing the form, to which he was told they would send a supervisor to see me. I'm still waiting for that visit.
The penalty for not completing the mandatory short form is a fine of up to $500 and/or a jail term of up to 3 months.
I am waiting to be charged so I can have my day in court.
